April 2013 P.R.A.Y. Update
(Information on the Protestant Christian Program Series)

THANK YOU for your kind words!

P.R.A.Y. has been so encouraged by the many comments submitted by parents, counselors, and pastors who have used the P.R.A.Y. program. Thank you for taking the time to let us know how the P.R.A.Y. program has impacted your family and/or ministry. We know that our curriculum results in more than just a child receiving an award, and your comments come at a good time…this has been a tough year for P.R.A.Y. and to receive so many words of appreciation for the P.R.A.Y. ministry has truly been a blessing. Thank you for your encouragement, and thank you for all that you do for children and youth!

The FOUR STAR registry has also been updated online. We are pleased to announce the first quarter recipients of this prestigious award. Four Star recipients have earned all four of the P.R.A.Y. awards (God and Me, God and Family, God and Church, and God and Life).
View the registry of names and also the usage figures since 2005.

A big “CONGRATULATIONS” to our Four Star recipients. We pray God’s continued blessings on you!

PLEASE CONSIDER A GIFT TO P.R.A.Y.

If your child or family experienced spiritual growth doing the P.R.A.Y. Program, if you or your Scout group benefited from the many resources on the P.R.A.Y. website, please consider a financial gift to P.R.A.Y. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your gifts are tax deductible. Two years ago we went out on faith and created a Director of Communication and Training position. Our “bare bones” operation is being stretched thin at a time when we are eager to expand our mission. Please consider becoming a “Friend of P.R.A.Y.” with a financial gift. Click here to make an online donation. Donations can also be made by check or money order, payable to P.R.A.Y. and mailed to:

ONLINE RESOURCES FOR COUNSELORS
TEACHING THE P.R.A.Y. PROGRAMS

Although the Counselor Manual is the key resource for teaching the P.R.A.Y. Program, there are many additional teaching aids available on the P.R.A.Y. website. Each program level has a page called “Program Resources for Counselors.” These pages not only have some of the handouts that are referenced in the Counselor Manual, they also contain additional ideas and suggestions and “best practices” shared by other users. We have provided the links to these pages for your convenience.

HONOR YOUR COUNSELORS WITH THE BUILDING FAITH IN YOUTH AWARD

Aren’t you proud when you see young people receive their P.R.A.Y. award in church? What about your adults? The young people couldn’t do it without their help. Let your adult counselors know that you’re proud of them, too! If your counselors have taught a P.R.A.Y. program three years or more, maybe it’s time to honor them with the Building Faith in Youth award. The only people who can receive this award are those who have actually taught the P.R.A.Y. Program for Protestant Christian youth. The award looks similar to the youth awards with the four-color cross, but it is an adult recognition worn around the neck. Nominations must come from a Protestant church; the only signature required is the pastor’s. Click here for a nomination form and to recognize the adults in your church for their faithful service in the Christian discipleship of your young people.

PROMOTE YOUR P.R.A.Y. MINISTRY

Two new posters are available in the online store to keep the P.R.A.Y. program visible year round in your church. Guests to your church will see the poster and know that you have a Scouting ministry and offer the P.R.A.Y. religious emblems classes. Use the Recipient Poster to display the names of the youth who have earned an award. Let them know you are proud of them!

The P.R.A.Y. Program poster displays the four medals for Protestant and Independent Christian Churches under the banner “Building Faith in Youth.” Use this attractive poster in your church or meeting place to invite others to join your program. Let everybody who comes in your building know that you’re using the P.R.A.Y. program to help children grow in faith. Space is provided at the bottom to add a local contact and/or to include the dates and times for your classes.

The P.R.A.Y. Recipient Poster can be displayed year-round to proudly announce the young people who earned a P.R.A.Y. award. Record their names and the completion date.  Use this poster to challenge ALL Protestant youth to earn their P.R.A.Y. award and to remind award recipients to continue their journey and enroll in the next level. Have a strong mentor program? Include the names of your mentors or get a separate poster just for them. Have a long-standing ministry with the P.R.A.Y. Program? Order a poster for each year of your ministry and display the names “through the years.” Each poster can list up to 30 names per program level.

Both posters are 13.25” x 19.25” and come folded down to 6.625” x 9.625”.

Click here to order your posters today!

Wear the P.R.A.Y. neckerchief to let others know that “Building Faith in Youth” is important to you! It’s one way to keep Duty to God central to your program.

Planning a celebration after your award ceremony? Oakdale Family Church in Oakdale, CA used the P.R.A.Y. shield and cross on the cake to honor their God and Me and God and Church recipients. The shield and other high resolution images are available online under “P.R.A.Y. Program Artwork/Images.”

NEW PRICES

After holding P.R.A.Y. awards at the same price since 2009, and holding books at the same price since 2002(!), P.R.A.Y. announced new prices effective March 2013. This was not an easy decision. Making the P.R.A.Y. program affordable has always been a top goal. Please note that the order forms in the back of the P.R.A.Y. booklets do not reflect the new prices. Click here for a current price list.

We appreciate your understanding during this transition.

KUDOS!

GOD AND ME

Terry Dunn, Chairman of the Anglican Church Scouting North America Committee submitted a photo of his grandson Joshua receiving the God and Me award on Scout Sunday at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Fort Collins, Colorado. Joshua is the first from this church to be awarded with his religious emblem. Joshua is pictured with his Dad (Terry’s son). The Anglican Church Scouting North America Committee is a relatively new association. Check out their website at http://anglican-scouting.org/

QUILT

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Huntingdon Valley, PA presents quilts to graduating seniors. The squares signify important milestones in their faith journeys. Pictured is Brian K. with the church member that made his Graduation Milestone Quilt. The God and Me and God and Life patches are prominently displayed in the center square!

ZUMBRO

P.R.A.Y.’s immediate database goes back twenty years, and Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota appears EVERY year in this database, but Zumbro actually started offering the P.R.A.Y. award in 1988. Impressive! They have faithfully been offering P.R.A.Y. classes ever since. Zumbro has had recipients in all levels of the P.R.A.Y. program (including the prestigious Four Star Award!) and has served youth in their Sunday school program as well as in the following youth agencies: American Heritage Girls, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., and 4-H. Also of note, Pack 82 chartered to Zumbro Lutheran Church has earned the Lutheran Recognition of Excellence (LRE) since 1989.
